I was able to make a similar catch which was just luck throwing my glove up but when I turned and threw with runners on the bases it went way out of bounds. From GOAT to Billy goat.

It’s unfortunate that Griffey’s body gave out on him. If it hadn’t, Griffey would have been the one to break Aaron’s record and would have done so without steroids. Even with his injuries he’s still #7 all time in home runs. He would have shattered the numbers of most players ahead of him had he stayed healthy. Keep in mind that he had only been in the Majors about 10 years when he hit his 400th home run. That was about 70 ahead of Bonds pace at the time. And he didn’t retire until 12 seasons later. Best defensive center fielder I’ve ever seen. He made plays look easier than any other outfielder who played the game. This video hardly scratches the surface of his amazing catches throughout the years.

When considering also his stellar fielding record, Willie Mays is certainly high on, if not on top of, the list of the greatest all-around players of all time. No doubt his stature is high; I even remember references to him in childhood Saturday morning cartoon shows. But I have the impression that what prevents him from having even higher stature in baseball and overall US cultural lore is the paucity of World Series appearances and relatively mediocre performance in them. In fact, his most memorable feat in World Series history was the catch in center field way back in 1954; for most people in successive generations, that is the only enduring highlight reel of him. Otherwise, he was no Mr. October. At the same time, I can imagine that the people who saw him play game-in game-out for so many years in San Francisco have good reason for considering him the GOAT. Fair enough; the rest of us lost out on experiencing to the fullest someone spectacular.

Willie was one of the best. He was only outshined by mantle because he wasn’t white. But I’m glad he’s gained all this recognition over time , especially since his passing, rip Willie.

Having watched his entire career, I still say Schmidt was the equal of Brooks Robinson as a defensive third baseman. But this video is a joke. Many of the plays shown were just routine plays and only a couple of them were among his greatest defensive plays.

I remember watching this game live. As they entered the 9th inning, I remember a stat that I have not been able to verify anywhere. The graphic said that the Tigers were 95-0 when leading entering the 9th inning in 1984. Does anyone else remember that?
